The YKI Test Explained: Intermediate Level (Keskitaso)

The YKI test is Finland's official language exam — the one most people take to prove their Finnish for citizenship, work or studies. If you are about to prepare for it, this guide explains what the test is, how the levels work, what the four parts look like and how the scoring works — focused on the intermediate level (keskitaso), which is the one that matters for citizenship.

What is the YKI test?

YKI (Yleinen kielitutkinto, "General Language Examination") is the National Certificate of Language Proficiency in Finland. It measures how well you can actually use the language in real situations — not grammar rules in isolation. The certificate is recognised nationwide and is organised at official test centres.

The three levels of YKI

YKI is offered at three levels, covering six points on the scale:

YKI levelScoreRoughly (CEFR)
Basic — perustaso1-2A1-A2
Intermediate — keskitaso3-4B1-B2
Advanced — ylin taso5-6C1-C2

For citizenship you take the keskitaso exam and need at least level 3 in speaking and writing. So when people ask "how do I pass YKI for citizenship?", they really mean: how do I reach level 3-4 at keskitaso.

The four parts of the exam

Every YKI exam tests four skills, each with its own result:

1. Reading comprehension — tekstin ymmärtäminen

You read everyday and informational texts (notices, letters, articles) and answer questions. The skill being tested is finding and understanding information quickly, not translating every word.

2. Writing — kirjoittaminen

Usually a couple of tasks of different lengths — for example a short message and a longer text such as a letter or an opinion. This is one of the two parts that must reach level 3 for citizenship. Completing every point of the task matters more than fancy language.

3. Listening comprehension — puheen ymmärtäminen

You listen to dialogues, announcements and short news items at natural speed, often including spoken-language forms, and answer questions. Reading the questions in advance helps you know what to listen for.

4. Speaking — puhuminen

You respond to prompts and speak in real time: reacting to a situation, describing, giving an opinion. This is the other part that must reach level 3 for citizenship. Fluency and being understood count more than perfect grammar.

How the scoring works

Each of the four parts is graded separately on a scale from 1 to 6. In the keskitaso exam, results normally land on levels 3-4. There is no single combined "pass mark" — what matters is the level of each part. For citizenship, the key requirement is at least level 3 in speaking and writing; the reading and listening results are recorded too.

Because you cannot retake a single part, it pays to prepare all four. A strong reading score won't make up for a speaking result below the level you need.

How to prepare

  • Know the format. Even with the right level of Finnish, you can lose points simply by not knowing what a task asks. Practise real YKI-style tasks in advance.
  • Prioritise speaking and writing. They decide the citizenship result, so give them the most practice.
  • Train speaking out loud. Speaking is a separate skill — reading and translating are not enough to build it.
  • Manage your time. Reading and listening move faster than you expect; don't get stuck on one item.

Frequently asked questions

What is the YKI test?

YKI is Finland's official National Certificate of Language Proficiency. It measures practical Finnish across four skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking — and is used for citizenship, work and studies.

What level is YKI keskitaso?

Keskitaso is the intermediate level, scored 3-4 on a 1-6 scale (roughly B1-B2). It is the level required for citizenship, where you need at least level 3 in speaking and writing.

How is the YKI test scored?

Each part is graded 1-6, separately. In keskitaso the results usually fall on 3-4. There is no combined pass mark — the level of each part is what counts.

How many parts does the YKI test have?

Four: reading, writing, listening and speaking — all on the same exam day.

Can I retake just one part of YKI?

No. The exam is taken as a whole; individual parts can't be retaken separately, so prepare all four.

In short

The YKI test measures real Finnish across four parts, each scored 1-6. For citizenship you take the intermediate exam (keskitaso) and need at least level 3 in speaking and writing. Knowing the format and training all four parts — especially the two that count — is the way to the result you need.
