Registering for YKI is not the hard part of your preparation — but since 1 January 2026 the cost of a mistake is higher: registration is now binding. Once you pay, you cannot change the date, level, language or test centre. So it pays to get everything right the first time. You register for YKI through one official portal only — yki.opintopolku.fi. No third-party sites, agents or "fast-track registration for a fee" are needed or work: this is a state exam, registration itself is free (you only pay for the test).
Where to register
The only address is yki.opintopolku.fi. You can log in two ways:
- With Suomi.fi e-identification — if you have Finnish online-banking credentials or a mobile certificate. This is the main method.
- By email — if you cannot use Suomi.fi. You will need a personal email address, which is where the payment link is sent.
You can register for only one YKI test on the same test day.

Payment is electronic, via the link in the email. Credit cards and Finnish online banking are accepted; paying later by invoice is not available. The payment link is valid for 1–3 days, so don't put it off.

Binding registration from 1 January 2026
After payment, registration is binding. You cannot change the level, language, set of subtests, test centre, test day or your participant details. Registration is personal — it cannot be transferred to someone else. And unlike the old rules, it can no longer be moved to a different date at all.

What to do if a date is full
Popular dates fill up fast. If no places are left, you can join the waiting list during the registration window:
- If a place opens up, you will be offered it no later than 9 days before the test.
- The waiting-list payment link is valid for one day only — check your email, including the spam folder.
- Until you pay, the place is not yours.

Refunds
Because registration is binding, the fee is generally not refundable. A refund is possible only in exceptional cases — typically for a valid reason with supporting documentation (such as a medical certificate) and an application filed within the set deadline. Common registration mistakes
- Waiting until the last day. The payment link lasts 1–3 days and popular dates sell out — register in the first days of the window.
- Choosing the wrong level "just in case". You can't change the level after paying. Citizenship needs keskitaso — don't overpay for ylin taso or waste money on perustaso.
- Not checking spam. The email comes from noreply@opintopolku.fi; if you don't open it in time, registration won't complete.
- Looking for an "agent". There is one official portal — yki.opintopolku.fi. Everything else is a needless cost.
