Reading feels like the "safe" part of YKI: the text is right there, nobody is rushing you out loud, you can re-read. That is exactly why people get caught out — they underestimate it. The real challenge of tekstin ymmärtäminen is not vocabulary but time and variety: in about an hour you must read and understand texts of very different genres and answer every question. Here is how it works, based on the test description from the University of Jyväskylä.
The single most important rule to accept before the exam: wrong answers are not penalised. So there should be no blanks — if you are unsure, answer anyway. And only what you transfer to the answer sheet counts, not what you marked in the test booklet.
How the reading test is built
At intermediate level (keskitaso) the reading test runs about 55 minutes and consists of several tasks across different texts. The texts are chosen to test different skills: sometimes you need to find one specific fact quickly, sometimes to grasp the overall meaning or the author's stance.

Critical: multiple-choice and true/false answers count only from the answer sheet. Marked in the booklet but not transferred? The point is lost. Leave time to transfer.
How to read fast enough
The main mistake is reading every text in full and thoughtfully, like a book. There is no time for that. Two techniques work together:
- Questions first, then the text. Read what is being asked, then read the text with a specific purpose.
- Skimming. For gist questions, run through the text without dwelling on every word.
- Scanning. For fact questions (price, date, name), hunt for exactly that instead of reading everything.
- An unknown word is not a stop sign. The sentence usually makes sense without it. Don't get stuck.
Five mistakes that cost points
1. Running out of time — leaving blanks
The most common and painful one. Since wrong answers aren't penalised, there should be no empty boxes. In the last couple of minutes, fill everything left, even by guessing.
2. Not transferring answers to the sheet
Marks in the booklet don't count. Keep the answer sheet beside you and transfer as you go, or reserve time at the end.
3. Getting stuck on one text
If a text won't click, skip it and come back. One hard question isn't worth three easy ones you didn't reach.
4. Chasing perfect understanding
You rarely need to understand a text 100%. You need to understand what is being asked. The rest you can skip.
5. Writing too much in open answers
An open answer is a short, to-the-point phrase, not a retelling. A long answer wastes time and adds errors.
